Essentials of Community Energy and Emissions Management
British Columbia Institute of Technology
About
This micro-credential program offers a practical approach to developing sustainable community energy plans. It is ideal for professionals involved in urban planning or sustainability who want to design low-carbon, energy-efficient communities. The curriculum covers on-site renewable energy integration, zero-emission buildings, and net-zero transportation solutions. Participants learn to assess a community’s energy use and emissions profile and then create a Community Energy and Emissions Plan (CEEP) to address those challenges. By the end, learners can identify major sources of emissions in communities and devise strategies (like energy-efficient building retrofits, clean transit options, and local renewable energy projects) to reduce carbon footprints while enhancing resilience.
Dates and Duration
Delivered as six short courses, mostly run in parallel with weekly live online classes. The entire microcredential is usually completed over roughly 5–6 months (with one course at a time). Each week includes about 2 hours of live interactive instruction plus additional independent study (readings, assignments). In total, learners might expect ~5 hours per week. The program is part-time to accommodate working professionals and features networking and discussion with peers given the interactive class format
